ASU Planetarium Releases Its Fall Planetarium Show Schedule

This fall, the Angelo State University Planetarium will present two full-dome public astronomy shows beginning Thursday, Sept. 3, in the Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building, 2333 Vanderventer St., said an ASU press release Wednesday.

The shows, “Secret Lives of Stars” and “Earthquake: Evidence of a Restless Planet,” will run at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. every Thursday from Sept. 3 through Nov. 19, excluding Oct. 15. All shows are open to the public. Admission prices for “Secret Lives of Stars” are $3 for adults, $2 for children, active military and senior citizens. ASU students, faculty and staff are admitted free. Visitors also pay no admission charge for “Earthquake” because it’s funded by the university’s Hispanic Serving Institution—Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (HSI-STEM) grant.

In addition to these shows, the Planetarium will host a special free presentation of “Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity” in Spanish at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to commemorate September as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

As for the main shows, “Secret Lives of Stars” will illustrate the size and specific characteristics of stars to determine what type of life they will lead and how long they might live.

The free show, “Earthquake: Evidence of a Restless Planet” will provide audience members with a “seismic experience” that will fly them over the San Andreas Fault before diving into the planet’s interior. Audience members will also travel back in time to witness both the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the break up of Pangaea 200 million years ago.

The Spanish show, “Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity,” explores “the power and grace” of black holes, one of the few cosmic phenomenon where the known laws of physics and general relativity break down. This immersive digital theater program incorporates some of the most intense three-dimensional visual effects ever created on the subject, read the press release.

For more information, call the Planetarium between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday – Friday at (325)942-2136. For more details on the Spanish presentation, call Dr. Juan Blandon at (325)486-6787.
