Angelo State University will host a Robert G. and Nona K. Carr Foundation Carr Signing Day event on Tuesday, April 21, for select area high school seniors who have been awarded Carr Academic Scholarships to attend ASU this fall.
The Carr Signing Day at ASU will begin at 6 p.m. in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center inside the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. The Carr Scholarship recipients invited to the event are from area high schools that did not conduct individual Carr Signing Day events at their respective campuses. The ASU event is open free to the public.
Several Carr Signing Day events have already been conducted at local and area high schools, including Central, TLC, Wall and Grape Creek. Lake View High School will have its Carr Signing Day event at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 22. Events at various area high schools will continue through May 19.
Carr Scholarships are renewable for four years and range in value from $1,500 to $15,000 per year. Scholarship awards are based on high school grade point average and standardized test scores on the ACT or SAT college entrance exams. The scholarships are funded by a $100 million endowment, one of the largest in the nation at a regional university. Robert G. Carr and his wife, Nona K. Carr, who bequeathed their interests in oil, gas and other minerals from producing properties in West Texas, made the Carr Foundation possible.
The Distinguished Carr Scholarship is ASU’s most prestigious scholarship for academic achievement and is renewable up to $60,000. Fewer than 10 Distinguished Carr Scholarships are awarded to new incoming students per year, providing each recipient with $15,000 annually. To be selected for the top award, students must score at least 32 on the ACT or 1400 on the SAT, maintain a high school cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and interview with ASU administrators.
The 2015 Carr Distinguished Scholarship recipients are Sarah Champagne and Clay Wegner of Central High School, Quint Anderson of Caldwell High School in Caldwell, Angela Chen of Brandeis High School in San Antonio, Cooper Jones of Borger High School in Borger and Jacob Meixner of Euless Trinity High School in Euless. Each has also been accepted into the ASU Honors Program.
