Art and Science Family Day at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts

 

Several student groups and faculty from Angelo State University will join with the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (SAMFA) to co-host Family Day Art and Science on Saturday, April 11, at SAMFA, 1 Love St. in downtown San Angelo.

The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is designed to show attendees the connections between art and science in a fun family setting. With an overall theme of “You Can’t Create Art Without Science,” activities will include science and art projects in SAMFA’s meeting room and education studio, including creating DNA necklaces.

Participants can also watch chemistry magic shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and create their own edible “rocks” with ASU science students.

Special guests BioRad will work with families to create “Genes in a Bottle.” The DNA extraction experiment makes biology personal by introducing students and their parents to molecular biology using their own DNA.  Participants will extract DNA from their cheek cells and then precipitate it and bottle it in a keepsake amulet.

ASU student groups participating in the event are the American Chemical Society, Kappa Delta Pi international education honor society, Geologic Exposition Organization (GEO) and Society of Physics Students. Members of the Howard College STEM Club and TAME: Art Engineers will also take part.
