ASU's Homecoming Culminates in Crowning

“We really mean it when we say homecoming,” said Dr. Brian May, the first graduate of ASU to become the university’s president.

ASU was narrowly defeated by Eastern New Mexico Saturday night with a score of 29-28, but the night wasn’t a total loss.

Each year alumni come back to watch the homecoming game. This year eight distinguished alumni, honorary alumni and outstanding faculty and staff were recognized by the Alumni Association during halftime.

“It’s an honor...the association is made up of many accomplished and successful individuals, so to be recognized by them for the work I do is truly special,” said Leonor Constancio, the recipient of the Distinguished Staff Achievement award.

The homecoming king and queen were also announced during the halftime show.

Preston Wimberly was crowned the 2013 Homecoming King. Wimberly was nominated by the Honors Student Association and is also the president of the Student Government Association.

He said,“It’s so important to get involved because you’re going to have more love for it [the university]; you’re going to do better for the school and the school in turn will do better for you.”

Wimberly said that homecoming week is a time for students to show school spirit.

Leading up to Saturday’s game, Wimberly participated in numerous events this week, including a peanut butter & jelly eating contest.

On why he stays involved the homecoming king said, “I love this school.”

Being crowned homecoming queen was of surprise for Victoria Limon.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said

Limon credits her organization for much of her growth throughout college. After joining the Association of Mexican Americans (AMAs) as a freshman, Limon said she has become a more confident person.

“Honestly, I wasn’t nervous at all because I was not expecting to win,” She said.

She stated how through her involvement with AMAs she has gained more of a voice.

“I’m definitely more outgoing now and am more willing to go out and talk to people,” Limon said.

The homecoming queen said that members of the organization really believed in her. For Limon, being crowned homecoming was a moment of affirmation.

“It’s a recognition that people appreciate me and the person I am,” Limon said.
