Students gathered around barbecue pits Sunday morning at the ASU Pavilion, each hoping to be cooking up the best beef as the University kicked off Homecoming week with a brisket cook-off.
Several campus organizations were also present, each guarding their own pits in order to compete for the best tasting brisket.
“We’ve got our own little seasoning going on here and we’re hoping to be competitive,” John Chappa said of Tri Beta’s brisket. He said, “We are cooking with a recipe that has been in the family for more than 20 years.”
A few feet over from Tri Beta’s set up is the Association of Mexican Americans. Unlike Tri Beta, this is their first time cooking a brisket.
“I hope it’s good,” Emily Banda said with a glance at the meat.
But whether they are the judge’s favorite or not, Banda says: “Homecoming is the best part of the school year. It’s a time when friendships are built and memories are made.”
Maxx Lazos, a member of Kappa Delta Rho, said that homecoming is whatever you make of it.
“To us, it is a really big deal. It’s a lot of fun and we try to share that excitement with everyone else,” Lazos said.
On whether their brisket has a chance at winning the cook-off Lazos said, “100 percent isn’t a chance, We got it.”
However, for most students winning isn’t what the brisket cook-off is all about.
Chappa said, “It’s a time to show our school spirit and it’s a great time to get involved, especially with all the organizations gathered here. It really builds camaraderie and brings all of us together.”
ASU’s homecoming game is set for Saturday, October 12 at 6 p.m. The Rams will be facing Eastern New Mexico. For a schedule of the events leading up to the game visit https://www.angelo.edu/services/csi/homecoming.php
