San Angelo Police: 16-Year-Old Killed in Bermuda Drive Shooting, 17-Year-Old Charged With Murder

SAN ANGELO, TX — A 16-year-old male is dead and a 17-year-old suspect is in custody following a shooting early Saturday morning in the 4400 block of Bermuda Drive, according to the San Angelo Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to the scene around 4:45 a.m. and found the teenage victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Shannon Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

At a 10:30 a.m. press conference, police identified the suspect as 17-year-old Derek Carson. He is currently in custody, and murder charges are expected to be filed.

Police said the case remains active and under investigation. “Our top investigators are continuing to work diligently to ensure a complete and thorough investigation,” Assistant Chief Craig Thomason said at the press conference. 

Authorities credited the rapid response of patrol officers, the Criminal Investigations Division, Special Operations Section, crime scene unit, and drone team for quickly identifying and apprehending the suspect. They also thanked members of the public who provided information.

“This appears to be an isolated event,” police said, adding that there is no ongoing threat to the community. No further details will be released at this time to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
