Exclusive Interview With 'Shane & Sally' Podcast Reporter
SAN ANGELO, TX — A new podcast series by Texas Monthly delves into the decades-old cold case murders of a young couple in San Angelo that captured national attention.
Launched on March 19, "Shane & Sally" revisits the tragic disappearance and subsequent murder of teenagers Sally McNelly and Shane Stewart, who vanished on July 4, 1988, after attending a local fireworks display.
The podcast, hosted by reporters Karen Jacobs and Rob D’Amico, offers a look behind the scenes of the investigation, providing listeners with exclusive access to interviews with investigators, case records, and individuals connected to the case who have remained silent until now.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Sally Ann McNelly, 18, and Shane Paul Stewart, 17, were last seen together at Lake Nasworthy, enjoying the annual Fourth of July festivities.
The following day, Stewart's Chevrolet Camaro was discovered abandoned, and in November 1988, both teenagers were found dead from gunshot wounds in a pasture near Twin Buttes Reservoir, about twenty miles from where Stewart's car was located.
Despite extensive investigations, their killer or killers remain at large.
"Shane & Sally" is available on all podcast platforms.
The Texas DPS is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the murders.
Tips can be submitted anonymously via phone or online through the Texas Rangers’ Cold Case website.
San Angelo LIVE! Publisher Joe Hyde sat down with Rob D’Amico to discuss the podcast's workings in more detail.
