WATCH: Tom Green County Deputies Move Prisoners Into the New Jail

SAN ANGELO,TX -- The new jail is open and Deputies with the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office moved in inmates.

According to the TGCSO, on July 7, the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office would like to announce that the move from the former Tom Green County Jail at 122 W. Harris in San Angelo was completed today. This move follows a five year building construction project at 4382 North U.S.277. The new facility is designed to house 552 inmates, an increase from the previous jail capacity of 449 inmates.  The move was several months in the planning and was executed without any significant incidents.  Over 400 inmates were successfully housed within the new facility.

Tom Green County Sheriff's Office jail staff and members from the patrol division, criminal investigation division, and the jail transport division began the process at 4:00 AM this morning, and completed the last delivery of inmates at approximately 3:55 PM.  The old jail facility opened in 1977 and was subject to two renovations which carried the facility through today.

The phone number to the Tom Green County Jail remains the same, citizens needing to contact the jail may do so by calling 325-659-6597.  Visitation at the new jail is contingent on orders from Governor Abbott regarding COVID-19.  Video visitation is in the process of being set up and is expected to be up and running in the next few days.  Inmates are able to make calls from within the facility as of today.
