Wanted Lifetime Sex Offender Arrested in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX — A lifetime registered sex offender wanted by Reagan County for failing to update his registration was taken into custody Wednesday morning in San Angelo. 

Macario Perez Oropeza Jr., 45, was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center just before 11 a.m. on a charge of sex offender’s duty to register life/annually, according to the sheriff’s office inmate roster. San Angelo Police Department is listed as the arresting agency. He is being held with no bond. 

Reagan County authorities issued a new felony warrant on Monday after Oropeza was arrested last month in Tom Green County, posted bond, and then failed to update his registration as required by Texas law. 

Oropeza was registered with the Reagan County Sheriff’s Office. His last recorded update was Nov. 20, 2023. In August, he was arrested in Tom Green County on a Reagan County warrant for failing to comply with lifetime/annual sex offender registration. Jail records from that booking show additional charges of possession of a controlled substance and failure to identify as a fugitive. After posting a $40,000 bond and being released, he was required to update his registration with Reagan County deputies no later than the seventh day after his release. 

As of the new warrant, officials said he had not done so and had not contacted the Reagan County Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency. They described the continued failure as a serious violation that presents public safety concerns. 

Under state law, people convicted of certain sex offenses must register for life and update that registration annually with the local law enforcement agency where they live.
