DALLAS, TX — A Dallas Independent School District police officer was hospitalized Thursday after authorities said he was shot by a person he was trying to help.
The shooting was reported around 11 a.m. at a Sam's Club in the 4100 block of Interstate 635 near Midway Road, according to Dallas ISD officials.
Dallas ISD police identified the officer as 39-year-old Justin Jones. Officials said Jones was assisting an individual in distress on Interstate 635 and transported that person to the Sam's Club parking lot, where the individual shot him.
Jones was struck at least once and was taken to Parkland Hospital, where he underwent surgery, Dallas ISD police said.
Officers who responded to the scene provided life-saving measures before Jones was transported to the hospital. A suspect was taken into custody, Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said during a news conference.
Jones has served with the Dallas ISD Police Department for 16 years, officials said.
In a statement, Walmart, the parent company of Sam's Club, said it is cooperating with law enforcement as investigators continue to examine the shooting.
