Standoff Suspect Arrested for Aggravated Robbery of Cab Driver

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man has been arrested for robbing a cab driver on the north side of town just weeks before he was involved in a standoff with police.

Michael Escobedo, 23, had a warrant for his arrest from the incident with the cab driver on June 7. He was charged with aggravated robbery.

Escobedo was the individual involved in the police standoff on June 25 when officers attempted to arrest him on two felony warrants. He fled into a home, which led to the standoff. During the standoff, Escobedo allegedly set fire to the home.

According to court documents, on June 7, a San Angelo police officer was flagged down at the intersection of East 42nd Street and Bowie Street regarding a robbery. The victim, who drives a cab, stated he received a pickup order for Michael Escobedo at Chan’s Beer Barn, 2702 N. Chadbourne St.

The victim said that he drove Escobedo to the 4200 block of Bonham Street, and he advised the cab fare was $11. Escobedo replied that he only had a $100 bill, so the victim requested Escobedo go into a nearby 7-Eleven at 3902 N. Chadbourne St. to break the large bill. Escobedo got out of the vehicle then returned shortly afterward, and they proceeded back to the Bonham Street.

Once they arrived at the original drop-off location, the victim heard a clicking sound behind him. He said that Escobedo pointed a black firearm at his head and demanded the victim hand over his "money, wallet, keys, phone, and everything else." The victim told Escobedo that he could not give up all of the items he wanted, then Escobedo stated, “Do you want to die?”

The victim complied and gave Escobedo all the cash in his possession. Escobedo then took the victim’s phone and keys to the van. Escobedo warned the victim not to follow him or he would kill him. Escobedo then exited the vehicle and ran westbound down the alleyway towards Bowie Street. The victim said once he lost sight of Escobedo, he proceeded to call for help and flagged down the police officer.

Surveillance video from the 7-Eleven was obtained and the investigator observed Escobedo exit the vehicle and enter the store. Then, he saw him get back in the vehicle before it drove away. A photograph of Escobedo was obtained from security footage from another business.

Escobedo was arrested on June 29, 2026, and booked into the Tom Green County Jail and is being held on $100,000 bond.
