ABILENE, TX — A Texas inmate convicted in the intoxication manslaughter death of an Abilene police officer is scheduled for early release from prison later this month, according to state records.
Marcos Suarez, who pleaded guilty in the 2007 death of Officer Jeff McCoy, is scheduled to be released June 30, 2026, according to records from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Suarez was sentenced to 20 years in prison after his conviction on Feb. 6, 2008.
Suarez is currently incarcerated at the Vance Unit, a state prison operated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. State records list June 30 as his projected early release date.
It was not immediately clear whether Suarez will be subject to special conditions upon release or whether McCoy's family has been notified of the pending release.
McCoy was killed June 5, 2007, when Suarez, then 39 and a resident of Midland, crossed into the officer's lane and struck his patrol vehicle at the intersection of South 14th Street and Ballinger Street in Abilene. The impact pushed the patrol car into a utility pole.
Toxicology reports released after the crash showed Suarez's blood-alcohol concentration exceeded the legal limit of 0.08%. Investigators also believed Suarez was speeding at the time of the collision.
McCoy had served with the Abilene Police Department for nearly 18 years, spending his entire career in the patrol division. He was survived by his wife and 2-year-old daughter.
