DALLAS, TX — A 41-year-old woman was shot and killed in front of her daughter outside a Five Below store in Dallas after confronting another shopper who allegedly failed to say “thank you” when she held the door open, according to police.
Investigators said the incident occurred Tuesday in the 3600 block of West Wheatland Road in the Oak Cliff area. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Keona Hampton, allegedly followed the victim, Cecilia Simpson, and her daughter from the Five Below to a nearby PetSmart after an argument inside the store.
Police said Simpson and her daughter were attempting to leave when Hampton threw a drink at their vehicle. Simpson reportedly got out of the car and began fighting with Hampton, who then allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Simpson multiple times.
Witnesses told investigators that Hampton shouted, “Come outside. Let’s handle this,” before the shooting. An ER nurse who tried to assist Simpson said the victim’s daughter witnessed the entire incident.
Hampton fled the scene but was later arrested after authorities tracked her down using license plate information. She reportedly told police she fired the gun in self-defense.
Hampton was booked into the Dallas County Jail. As of Friday, no bond had been set.
