Man Charged With Murder in Fatal Shooting of 11-Year-Old

HOUSTON, TX — A 42-year-old man has been charged with murder after the fatal shooting of 11-year-old Julian Guzman, who was playing "ding-dong ditch" with other children before being shot late Saturday, according to Houston police and court records.

The incident happened around 10:55 p.m. Aug. 30 in the 9700 block of Racine Street. Police said Guzman and other children were ringing doorbells and running away when someone came out of a home and opened fire. A witness told investigators that Guzman was running from the house when he was struck.

Guzman was taken to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced deceased on Aug. 31.

Police initially detained and questioned one person but released them. Following further investigation, detectives identified Gonzalo Leon Jr. as the suspect. Charges were filed on Sept. 1, and Houston police SWAT and CAT units arrested Leon on Sept. 2. He is being held at the Harris County Jail.

During the investigation, police executed a search warrant at the house and seized several rifles and handguns as evidence.
