San Angelo Man Indicted for Stabbing Stranger With Box Cutter

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man has been indicted for assaulting a man with a box cutter.

Michael Zubiate, 42, of San Angelo, was indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to court documents, on Dec. 19, 2024, around 3:45 p.m., San Angelo police officers responded to a stabbing call in the 300 block of West Avenue P.

Investigators responded and officers said that the victim had suffered multiple lacerations. These were the results of an assault that occurred on Lone Wolf Bridge in San Angelo. The victim said that an unknown man, who would be identified as Zubiate, approached him on a bike while he was taking a break while running errands.

As Zubiate drew closer to the victim, they stared each other down. This caused the victim to question Zubiate’s intent. Zubiate then became agitated and became confrontational by starting a verbal argument.

Zubiate eventually produced a box cutter, and the victim removed a tool used to ward off animals from his bike. Zubiate then produced a belt and closed his distance to the victim.

The victim was able to gain control over the belt, but this left him open to being stabbed by Zubiate. The victim fled the scene to his house before finding out the severity of his injuries. He did recall Zubiate saying something to the effect of, “I’ll kill you."

The victim gave a description of what Zubiate was wearing, and other officers responded to Lone Wolf Bridge and located Zubiate with help from a drone. Zubiate approached one of the officers and identified himself as a transient staying near the scene.

The investigator arrived and positively identified Zubiate by the clothes he was wearing, which were the same as during the assault. Zubiate also had a box cutter on his person.

The victim suffered a four-inch laceration to his neck, a one-inch laceration to his bicep, and suffered injuries to his left hand and fingers.

Zubiate was arrested on Dec. 19, 2024, and has remained an inmate in the Tom Green County Jail since, being held on a $75,000 bond. He has a jury trial set for Aug. 18, 2025.
