Odessa Shooting Leaves One Dead, Two Injured; Investigation Ongoing

ODESSA, TX — A man was shot and killed, and two others were injured in a shooting Sunday night at a residence in Odessa, according to Odessa police.

Odessa police officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to a home in the 500 block of Bunche Avenue, where they found Rene Mendoza, 33, dead in the front yard. Inside the residence, officers discovered Sergio Ramos, 26, and Stephanie Urias, 33, suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to Medical Center Hospital in stable condition.

Investigators believe Mendoza arrived at the home in a vehicle, intending to confront someone inside. At least one other person was with him at the time. According to witnesses, Ramos armed himself before Mendoza exited his vehicle, allegedly brandishing a firearm. A brief altercation ensued, and Ramos fired several shots, striking Mendoza and Urias. Ramos told officers he feared for his life when he fired.

The individuals who arrived with Mendoza fled the scene. Police later arrested one suspect, identified as Fernando Mendoza, on an Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon charge related to the incident.

Authorities are still investigating Ramos’ involvement in the shooting, though no charges have been filed against him at this time. The case will be presented to an Ector County grand jury.
