Previously Deported Suspects Caught with 344 Pounds of Meth Hidden in ‘Iceberg Lettuce’ Boxes

LIBERTY COUNTY, TX – A traffic stop in Liberty County led to the seizure of 344 pounds of methamphetamine and the arrest of three men, all of whom had been previously deported, according to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

On Feb. 12, the Liberty County Interdiction Unit stopped a white panel van in the Plum Grove area. The driver, identified as Gerson Lopez Zuniga, was found to be in possession of a semi-automatic handgun. Two passengers, Cruz Isidro Sandoval and Adan Aguirre Arzate, were also in the vehicle.

During the stop, Sandoval admitted to having a large quantity of methamphetamine at a camper trailer on Road 3542. Investigators searched the trailer and found 156 kilograms (344 pounds) of meth hidden in 12 boxes labeled “Iceberg Lettuce.”

Authorities determined that all three men were in the country illegally and had been deported multiple times before. They were taken to the Liberty County Jail, where Sandoval was charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance over 400 grams, a first-degree felony. Zuniga and Aguirre were held on ICE detainers.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation with assistance from the Houston Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
