7 San Antonio Officers Shot in Standoff, Suspect Found Dead

SAN ANTONIO — Seven police officers were shot Wednesday night after responding to a call about a distressed family member at the Sonterra Heights apartment complex in Stone Oak. The suspect barricaded himself in an apartment for hours before being found dead by SWAT officers.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said officers were shot one by one as they responded to the scene. The first officer was hit in the lower extremities, followed by others, with one officer struck in the upper torso. All officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are being treated.

The standoff began around 8:30 p.m. when officers were called to the 18700 block of Stone Oak Parkway. Tear gas was deployed, and officers used breaching techniques to enter the suspect’s apartment, where he was found deceased. Investigators are determining whether his death was self-inflicted or a result of police action.

The suspect, a man in his 40s, was recently arrested on January 18 on two assault charges and a DWI. He was out on bond at the time of the incident. McManus said the officers involved had four to eight years of experience, but their identities have not been disclosed.

The investigation remains ongoing.
