Odessa Woman Charged With Capital Murder in Infant’s Death

ODESSA, TX — A 22-year-old woman was arrested and charged with capital murder after investigators determined her newborn died from asphyxia in October.

Yanira Prado was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday after an autopsy revealed her child was born alive and full-term before its death, according to Odessa police. The investigation began on Oct. 9, when officers responded to a home on the 2900 block of W. 6th Street and found the deceased infant in a toilet.

Police said Prado was transported to Medical Center Hospital for evaluation after the discovery. Initial findings raised suspicions, prompting investigators to request a complete autopsy.

On Dec. 6, autopsy results confirmed that the infant had been breathing at the time of birth and died of asphyxia. Investigators concluded that Prado intentionally caused the newborn’s death, leading to an upgraded charge of homicide.

Prado was transported to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center. The case will be referred to the Ector County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
