SABINE COUNTY, TX — A Texas lawyer is accused of shooting his son and burning his body on a rural property in Deep East Texas, the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday.
Michael C. Howard, a Houston attorney, allegedly told deputies he mistook his son, Mark Randall Howard, for an intruder Sunday evening at a property on Mount Sinai Road. Howard later reported placing his son’s body in the bucket of a backhoe, transporting it to a remote area, and burning it on a trash pile, deputies said.
Sabine County deputies were contacted Monday by Howard, who described the incident as a “horrible accident.” According to officials, Howard led deputies to a shotgun he claimed was used in the shooting and later showed them the area where he said he burned the remains.
Investigators secured a search warrant and recovered what appeared to be charred human bones and body parts at the scene.
“All bones appeared to have been burned,” the sheriff’s office stated, adding that the area was “heavy with soot and ash.” The remains were sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further analysis.
Howard was arrested and charged with murder and tampering with evidence, the latter charge stemming from the burning of the body. He is being held in the Sabine County Jail on a $10 million bond.
The investigation is ongoing.
