Stabbing Suspect Who Barricaded Himself in Apartment Indicted

SAN ANGELO, TX— The man who barricaded himself inside a small apartment in September has been indicted.

Ricardo Rico, 49, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon after allegedly stabbing his victim twice in the leg with a knife.

According to court documents, on September 14, 2024, San Angelo police officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Howard Street regarding a stabbing.

The investigator reviewed an email from a San Angelo police officer in which the victim stated he was seated outside his residence when a Hispanic male approached him holding a large knife. The man, identified as Rico, began swinging the knife at the victim and stabbed him twice in the leg.

A Lieutenant with the San Angelo Police Department told investigators that the victim was transported from the scene to the emergency room for medical treatment.

Rico fled to an apartment located in the backyard of a residence in the 2100 block of Forest Park and barricaded himself inside.

Information released by San Angelo Sergeant John Bouligny stated that Rico refused to comply with officer’s commands to surrender and that Rico remained inside the shed.

Due to the severity of the situation, the Critical-Incident Commander activated the San Angelo Police Department’s Critical Incident Teams, (SWAT, CNT, DRONE) to manage the incident.

Meanwhile, an arrest warrant was sought for Rico.

After the arrest warrant was issued and Rico continued to refuse to surrender, the SWAT Team deployed a limited amount of chemical munitions. After this deployment, Rico surrendered to the San Angelo Police Department’s SWAT Team. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Rico was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on September 14, 2024, and has been an inmate since being held on $80,000 bond.
