SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo Animal Services officer remains in critical condition after a violent attack by two large dogs on Wednesday, November 6.
The officer, who has not been identified, sustained severe injuries, including multiple bite wounds, lacerations, and a broken arm. He was initially treated locally and later flown to Lubbock for advanced medical care.
City Manager Daniel Valenzuela issued a statement urging the community to support the injured officer and his family, saying, “This is a dedicated public servant whose life is at risk.” Valenzuela called for the community’s prayers as the officer continues to fight for recovery.
According to a release from the City of San Angelo, an Animal Services officer responded to a report of aggressive dogs roaming freely on Cloud Street. Upon arrival, he encountered at least 10 dogs on the property. Witnesses reported that when the owner opened the gate, two large mixed-breed dogs, reportedly with some pit bull characteristics, escaped and attacked the officer.
San Angelo Police and Fire Department personnel were on the scene promptly to provide first aid before the officer was airlifted. The dogs involved in the attack were surrendered to Animal Services by their owner and subsequently euthanized with the owner’s consent, following local procedures for severe incidents of this nature.
San Angelo Police Chief Travis Griffith confirmed that the department’s Criminal Investigations Division is reviewing the case to determine if any criminal charges are warranted. Chief Griffith noted that attacks causing serious bodily injury could lead to felony charges, depending on factors such as owner negligence or malicious intent.
Valenzuela assured residents that this is an active investigation and that authorities will share more information as it becomes available.
The press conference will air on our LIVE! Daily News show this afternoon.
