San Angelo Man Indicted After Shooting at Two Women, Turning Gun on Himself

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man has been indicted after shooting at two women before shooting himself.

Nathan Burnett, 42, of San Angelo, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to court documents, on March 2, 2024, around 2:45 a.m., San Angelo police responded to River Pointe Apartment, located at 1140 Benedict Drive regarding a shooting victim. Officers on the scene observed a pool of blood, blood spatter, and a handgun lying next to a vehicle in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Officers told the investigator that the defendant, identified as Burnett, had shot himself and fled the scene on foot. Blood droplets were left on the sidewalk and continued east from the location.

The two victims said that Burnett had fired the gun at the vehicle they were sitting in. The back windshield of that vehicle had been shattered due to the gunshot.

A witness told the investigator that she heard a “pop” sound outside her apartment and saw one of the victims reversing a vehicle and driving off. The witness also stated that she saw Burnett shoot himself and fall to the ground by a parked vehicle. When the witness went outside, Burnett had left the scene.

One of the victims said that she and Burnett were in a dating relationship and had text messages from Burnett threatening to shoot himself just before shooting at the victims. A photograph on her phone showed Burnett pointing a handgun at his head. She also stated that she was dropping off a family member as Burnett kept threatening to shoot himself.

Both victims were inside when one heard a loud pop, and then the glass shattered behind her. The driver was not injured and left the scene but was able to come back after officers arrived.

The second victim said she had gotten into the vehicle and heard Burnett and the other victim arguing on the phone. After she was in the vehicle, she heard gunshots and then Burnett banged on the window of the vehicle. As the two victims were leaving, the second victim heard another pop and saw Burnett fall to the ground.

Burnett was found inside a residence a few miles away and had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was conscious and breathing as he was transported to Shannon Medical Center.

Burnett is still an inmate in the Tom Green County Jail and is next due in court on January 21, 2025.
