Parents Remember Rice Uni Student Killed in Murder-Suicide as ‘Loving, Independent’

HOUSTON, TX – The parents of Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a 21-year-old Rice University student who was killed in a murder-suicide on the first day of classes, have spoken out about their daughter’s life and legacy. Avila was a junior pre-law student majoring in political science.

Avila was found shot to death in her Jones College dorm room on Monday. The suspect, a 22-year-old non-student identified as Habeneyom Belai, was discovered alongside her with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities believe the incident was a murder-suicide, although the nature of their relationship remains unclear. A note found at the scene referenced troubles in what appeared to be a dating relationship.

On Thursday, Avila’s grieving parents released a heartfelt statement, describing her as a “loving, caring, humble and intelligent gift to the world.” They emphasized her independence, her dedication to helping others, and her aspirations to work for the United Nations. Born in Honduras, Avila had lived in Spain and Maryland before transferring to Rice from the Community College of Baltimore County. Her family highlighted her academic achievements and active involvement in campus organizations.

“We want Andrea’s life and the tragedy of her death to make a difference,” the statement read. The family urged fellow students to honor her memory by caring for others and encouraged parents to maintain open communication with their children about relationships.

The family also strongly disagreed with reports suggesting a relationship between Avila and Belai, stating that her life was “lost to horrific violence at the hands of one man who is solely responsible.”

Her family has asked for privacy as they mourn the loss of their daughter, sister, and friend.

Rice University officials confirmed Avila’s involvement in several campus organizations, including the Rice Student Association and the university’s honor council. Avila had only been at Rice since the previous spring semester.

Rice University canceled classes on Tuesday following the incident but resumed on Wednesday.
