SAN ANGELO, TX— A San Angelo woman who was involved in a standoff with law enforcement has been indicted.
Norma Lee Hernandez, 38, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury after nearly cutting off a man’s fingers, leading to a standoff with Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
According to court documents, on April 21, 2024, Hernandez was arrested for injury to a child, elderly, or disabled individual, and the victim requested a protective order, which was approved by Judge Tom Daniel.
On May 6, 2024, Hernandez was observed at the protected address after deputies responded to a call for service. The victim advised them that Hernandez had stayed at the residence for the weekend and that the two had a verbal and physical altercation during that time. Then, Hernandez was arrested for violating a protective order.
Deputies responded to Shannon Clinic on May 17, 2024, where the victim told them Hernandez arrived again at the protected residence on May 15, 2024, and the victim feared for his safety. Hernandez allegedly struck the victim during that time. When the victim tried to call for emergency services, Hernandez said “Try and call someone and see what happens to you."
The victim attempted to hide in a closet. Hernandez slammed the closet door shut which partially amputated the victim’s fingers. He was able to contact law enforcement, and Hernandez stayed in the lobby of the hospital while the victim was being examined. Then, the victim stated that Hernandez uses narcotics regularly, specifically methamphetamine, and he is afraid for his safety and his son’s safety.
On the same date, deputies responded to the protected residence and located Hernandez. She barricaded herself inside the residence and brandished a knife in each hand, threatening the deputies.
Hernandez refused to speak with negotiators and remained inside the house until a chemical irritant was introduced inside the home. At that point, she was taken into custody after resisting arrest.
Hernandez was eventually arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Jail on May 17, 2024, where she had remained an inmate since on a $133,000 bond.
