Local Man Agrees to Plea Deal for Credit Card Abuse and Possession

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man, Derrick Wayne Styles, 49, has agreed to take a plea deal for credit card abuse and possession of methamphetamine.

According to court documents, on March 31, 2023, a victim reported unauthorized use of her debit card to a San Angelo police officer. The victim stated that she asked her friend, Styles, to run to Dollar General to pick up some items.

Styles took a while to return, causing the victim to check her bank account online. She noticed unauthorized transactions that were made at Walgreens and Citizen’s State Bank. Both of these transactions were at an ATM and were for approximately $100.

The victim called Styles, who denied making the withdrawals.

The officer waited for Styles to return and then confronted him about the debit card abuse. Styles again denied making any unauthorized transactions with the victim’s bank card. He stated that he did go to Dollar General but had to make a trip to Walmart for one of the items.

On May 2, 2023, a security video was obtained from Walgreens and Citizen’s State Bank. Styles was seen wearing jeans and a blue t-shirt with white lettering making an ATM withdrawal at Citizen’s State Bank. He was also observed arriving at Walgreens in the victim’s vehicle and entering the store in the same clothing.

On May 5, 2023, the victim identified Styles in still photos from the security video. The responding officer’s body camera footage was reviewed, and Styles was seen wearing the same blue t-shirt when speaking with the officer on March 31, 2023.

Also, on November 28, 2023, investigators observed a grey passenger car traveling southbound on Farr Street that failed to signal a turn the required distance before turning. Styles was the sole occupant in the vehicle and, after a warrant check, he was found to have two Tom Green County warrants for his arrest.

During a search of Styles’ person, a small sandwich bag that contained a white crystal-like substance was discovered in Styles’ sock. A field test of the substance returned a positive identification for the presence of meth. The weight of the meth with the packaging was 3 grams.

In exchange for a guilty plea, as listed on court documents, Styles agreed to 10 years inside the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and 10 years of probation for both charges and must pay $381.50 in restitution. Those sentences will run concurrently.
