BROWNWOOD, TX — A wanted man attempted to flee from the State of Texas Parole Office on Monday, injuring himself severely in the process, according to Brownwood Police.
This happened around 1:20 p.m. on July 15, when officers were dispatched to the parole office in the 900 block of Main St. after receiving a report of a wanted subject. Upon arrival, officers found 62-year-old Geronimo Franklin Mendieta of Brownwood in the parking lot attempting to escape on foot.
When officers approached Mendieta, he refused to comply with their instructions. Instead, he retrieved a box cutter razor knife and began slicing his legs, arms, and neck, causing serious injuries.
Officers used stabilized bean bag rounds to contain and secure Mendieta. He was provided immediate care until the Brownwood Fire Department and AMR ambulance service arrived.
Mendieta was then transported to Hendrick Medical Center-Brownwood, where he underwent emergency surgery.
The extent of his self-inflicted injuries is currently unknown.
The Brownwood Police Department, with assistance from the local office of the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers, is continuing to investigate the incident.
