Sheriff: Man Arrested in Manhunt Wanted for Murder

SAN ANGELO, TX — The quiet evening of Sunday, July 14, was shattered by the sound of gunfire along South US Highway 87. At approximately 7 p.m., authorities from the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, San Angelo Police Department, and Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene where a gunshot victim lay injured. The victim was swiftly transported to Shannon Medical Center, clinging to life.

Witnesses recounted a harrowing sight: a Hispanic female and a black male fleeing north into a dense wooded area. The hunt was on. A perimeter was established, and a ground search commenced, involving San Angelo Police K9 and Drone units, and Texas Department of Public Safety ground and aircraft units. Despite nine grueling hours of searching, the trail went cold.

But the story didn’t end there. The very next day, on July 15, deputies were called to the 700 block of Fairview School Road due to suspicious circumstances. Upon arrival, they spotted the same pair sprinting south toward the grand canal. The female, identified as Gloria Jaramillo, 36, was apprehended on the spot and charged with evading arrest.

The male suspect, Michael Pacheco, 37, proved more elusive. After another exhaustive manhunt, he was captured and revealed to be wanted for murder in New Mexico. Additional charges against him are pending.

The community can now breathe a sigh of relief as both suspects are in custody. Sheriff’s Office officials extended their gratitude to the San Angelo Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Homeland Security Investigations for their invaluable assistance.

Here are updates as the story happened, starting from Sunday evening:

UPDATE 3:55 p.m. - An eyewitness told us that late yesterday evening when driving in to San Angelo, they saw a man between the northbound and southbound lanes in the median of south US 87. He looked like he was waving for help, the witness who asked not to be identified said. The man was standing in the median at around the 800 block of US 87 near the intersection with Abbott Lane.

"We passed him and made a u-turn as soon as we could," the witness said.

As they approached from the opposite direction (southbound), they saw the man drop to his knees as others who had arrive at his location sooner were starting to give the man first aid as best they could. Within minutes and ambulance arrived, loaded the shooting victim up quickly, and whisked him away to Shannon ER. Sheriff's deputies also arrived at about the same time. Our eyewitness departed the scene.

By the time our witness arrived at their home, news had spread quickly that an armada of law enforcement was searching for a suspect with dogs and drones. By 8:18 p.m. last night, San Angelo police told us they were looking for a young black man and a Hispanic female.

The search continued overnight and into this afternoon. The woman was found and arrested first at around 12:45 p.m. The rest of the afternoon up and until around 3 p.m. the search for the man continued until the sheriff announced he was also in custody. Having purportedly shot someone and assumed armed, the sheriff and police warned citizens to stay indoors until the suspect was caught.

Arrested were Gloria Jaramillo and Michael D. Pacheco. We will learn more as the case unfolds.

UPDATE 2:22 p.m. The San Angelo Police Department announced that the area around Fairview School Road and Brodnax Lane off of south US 87 is all clear. Rumors are circulating that the suspect, earlier identified as Michael D. Pacheco, a Hispanic male about 36 years old, was captured. But these rumors are unconfirmed.

UPDATE 1:25 p.m. The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office SRT (SWAT team) just arrived at the scene on Brodnax Lane. The situation has signs of becoming a standoff. The Bearcat armored vehicle is the SRT vehicle.
