Violent Man Who Sexually Assaulted a Woman Gets Prison

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man accepted a plea deal for multiple serious charges, including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Sexual Assault. Jerry Ray Gonzalez, 23, of San Angelo, entered pleas for Assault of a Family Member, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Sexual Assault, Deadly Conduct by Discharging a Firearm, and Violation of a Protective Order.

According to court documents, on June 22, 2021, police responded to the 900 block of Glenna Street for a report of a male assault victim. Witnesses reported that Gonzalez engaged in a physical altercation with the victim, wielding a knife.

During the altercation, Gonzalez stabbed the man multiple times in the torso, arm, and head. The victim sustained critical injuries, requiring medical treatment including a chest tube for a collapsed lung and stitches for his wounds.

Surveillance footage from a nearby business and witness recordings captured Gonzalez at the scene.

Additionally, on the same day, Gonzalez allegedly sexually assaulted a woman, using a firearm during the assault, as per an indictment.

On March 21, 2022, San Angelo police responded to an assault in progress in the 2400 block of SMU Avenue in College Hills. Officers spoke with a woman who reported being assaulted by Gonzalez following an argument inside a residence.

CSI photographs of the woman showed visible red marks consistent with strangulation under her jawline.

The homeowner, who indicated Gonzalez and the victim were dating and frequented the residence, provided RING doorbell footage. The footage showed an argument between Gonzalez and the victim at 6:06 a.m. Gonzalez struck the victim after he spat on her. He then chased her into the front yard, where he placed his arms around her throat and dragged her backwards. Police heard the victim struggling on the audio from the RING Doorbell footage. After a while, the video sound grew eerily quiet as the screams of the woman stopped as she gasped for air due to Gonzalez's chokehold.

Gonzalez faced charges including Sexual Assault, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Deadly Conduct, Assault of a Family Member, and Violation of Bond or Protective Order.

In exchange for his guilty pleas, Gonzalez received concurrent sentences of eight years for Assaulting a Family Member, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Violating a Protective Order; 10 years for Deadly Conduct by Discharging a Firearm; and 12 years for Sexual Assault.

These sentences result in Gonzalez serving 12 years in prison, or until he becomes eligible for parole.

Got him on audio and video and you make a plea deal with this loser slug.

This sure gets old.

You're correct. I haven't lived in SA for years and it gets old just reading about the continuous plea deals. Apparently the District Attorney doesn't understand that harsh sentences for violent crime isn't about revenge, it's a deterrent hopefully to stop the next animal from doing the same thing. I once knew a guy that was always doing something illegal or hurting someone. We were talking and I asked him "With the life you are living aren't you afraid of going back to Huntsville?" He just smirked and said "I can do five (5 years) standing on my head. Just like today's criminals he had no fear of receiving any harsh punishment.

I wonder how many hours that guy spent in front of a mirror practicing that pose he gave in his mugshot.
