MONTGOMERY, AL - A former Montgomery police officer, Renee Helton, alleges that she faced retaliation and was eventually terminated by the Montgomery Police Department (MPD) after refusing to have an affair with Montgomery Police Chief Darryl J. Albert. Helton claims she was fired for declining a sexual relationship with Albert and that her termination followed her filing an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint against the MPD.
In an audio recording provided to 1819 News from an appearance on News Radio 1440's Decisions with Kevin Elkins, Helton, her attorney Mickey McDermott, and Marcus Webster, Helton's fiancé, detailed their side of the story. Helton outlined events where Albert allegedly sought a sexual relationship, which she declined due to Albert's marital status. Helton claims she faced retaliation after her relationship with Marcus became public. According to Helton, Mayor Steven Reed was made aware of the EEOC complaint on Aug. 4, 2023, and she received termination paperwork on Nov. 29, 2023.
Attorney Mickey McDermott asserted that Helton's complaints were brought to the city's attention through proper channels, including her chain of command and the mayor's office. He criticized the city's lack of response and accused Mayor Reed of not protecting a female citizen and employee under his command.
Helton provided details of alleged sexually suggestive comments from Albert despite her clear disinterest. The accusations also pointed to Albert's previous position at the New Orleans Police Department, where he faced similar allegations. Helton defended herself against claims of vengeance, emphasizing her intent to expose Albert's alleged misconduct.
Chip Hill, the chief of staff for Mayor Reed, stated that the city cannot comment on legal proceedings. McDermott mentioned that the federal EOCC complaint allows the federal government to investigate the matter, and they are awaiting a determination.
Rumors about Albert's alleged sexual misconduct had circulated for over a month. Although online speculation suggested Albert's resignation, Chip Hill posted a video dismissing the rumors. McDermott mentioned that "numerous" others have brought similar complaints against the city and Albert, and he anticipates more.
The situation underscores the need for thorough investigations into allegations of misconduct within law enforcement agencies to ensure transparency and accountability.
