Driver Indicted for 'Small Amount' of the Devil's Lettuce

SAN ANGELO— A New Braunfels man has been indicted for having 'small amount' of the devil’s lettuce in his possession while driving through Tom Green County last November.

William Jones, 27, was indicted in January by a Tom Green County grand jury for Possession of between 5 lbs. and 50 lbs. of marijuana.

According to court documents, on November 12, 2023, at around 2:30 p.m., a DPS Trooper was on patrol on US 87 and stopped a gray 2004 Infinity G37 for speeding, an improperly placed license plate, and a defective stop lamp.

When the trooper approached, he smelled a strong odor coming from inside the vehicle. When asked, the driver identified himself as the Jones, with a California temporary drivers license. The trooper asked if Jones sprayed the perfume to cover the smell of marijuana and if there was any pot in the vehicle. Williams stated that there was a “small amount” of marijuana inside the car.

This gave the trooper probable cause to search the vehicle where two vape cartridges were found that contained a brown substance. This was identified as tetrahydrocannabinol oil., THC Then, a bag with a leafy green substance was found in the front seat. Jones said the trunk of the vehicle would not open and that he had never opened it.

The trooper accessed the truck through the back seat and located a duffle bag containing vacuum sealed plastic bags that contained the same leafy green substance that had been identified as marijuana. The duffle bag contained 21 pounds of marijuana. Two handguns were also located inside the vehicle.

Jones was arrested on November 12, 2023, for Possession of Marijuana >5 lbs. <=50 Lbs., Possession of a Controlled Substance PG2 >=1G<4G, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon and he was issued three warning for the improperly placed license plate, speeding, and a defective stop lamp. He was released the next day on $20,500 bond.

Jones is next due in court on February 21, 2024, for post indictment reporting.
