Tom Green Co. Sheriff's Office Warns of Jury Duty Scam

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning following reports of a phone scam targeting citizens with false claims of missing jury duty and impending felony warrants. The caller, who has been known to identify himself as either Randy Swick or Keith Muncey, is soliciting payments under the guise of resolving the alleged "warrants."

Notably, the caller possesses the ability to "clone" phone numbers, potentially making it appear as if the call is originating from the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line. These deceptive calls, often originating from locations outside the United States, pose challenges in tracking and interception.

To safeguard against falling victim to such scams, residents are advised to adhere to the following safety tips:

  1. Question Caller ID Accuracy: Relying solely on caller ID can be misleading, as the displayed telephone number may be manipulated.

  2. Send Unknown Calls to Voicemail: When faced with unsolicited or unfamiliar phone calls, consider directing them to voicemail, as scam call centers may refrain from leaving messages.

  3. Exercise Caution with Links: Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails or text messages, as they may lead to fraudulent websites or deploy malicious software.

  4. Guard Personal and Financial Information: Refrain from providing personal or financial details in response to unsolicited communications, such as text messages, emails, or social media posts claiming to represent a government agency.

In the event of receiving a suspicious call of this nature, the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office strongly recommends hanging up immediately. Prevention remains the most effective measure against such fraudulent activities. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any instances of attempted scams to local authorities.

For further information or to report suspicious activity, please contact the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office at 325-655-8111.
