PANHANDLE, TX – Texas Department of Public Safety troopers a seized over 10 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and more than two pounds of suspected fentanyl during a routine traffic stop in Carson County. The operation unfolded on Monday, Jan. 22, around 2 p.m., when a DPS Trooper intercepted a 2015 Nissan Altima traveling east on I-40 near Conway for a traffic violation.
Upon further inspection, the trooper discovered a concealed compartment in the dashboard area of the vehicle, revealing ten plastic-wrapped bundles of methamphetamine and one plastic-wrapped bundle of fentanyl. The discovery prompted the immediate involvement of DPS Special Agents and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agents, who collaborated on the investigation.

The seized narcotics, with an estimated street value yet to be disclosed, were found in transit from Los Angeles, California to Peoria, Illinois. The DPS press release confirmed that 21-year-old Jovanny Melgoza-Hernandez, hailing from Peoria, Illinois, was taken into custody and subsequently booked into the Carson County Jail. He faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.
The coordinated efforts between DPS and DEA highlight the ongoing commitment to intercepting illegal drug trafficking activities on Texas highways. The interception not only prevents the distribution of dangerous substances but also underscores the significance of law enforcement partnerships in combating drug-related crimes.
