Plea Deal Sends San Angelo Drug Dealer to Prison

SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo drug dealer has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to selling drugs and evading arrest last January.

Robert Mejia, 33, has taken a plea deal in court Tuesday for Manufacture and Delivery of a Controlled Substance and Evading Arrest with a Vehicle.

According to court documents, on January 21, 2023, at around 9:45 p.m., a vehicle was seen by a Tom Green County Sheriff’s deputy to have a defective license plate and defective mounted stop lamp traveling south on US Highway 87 and Side View Road. The deputy turned on his lights to stop the vehicle for the violations.  

The suspect vehicle refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued. After committing several traffic violations while running from law enforcement, the chase came to an end at 2101 Ben Ficklin Road at Marquez Bakery. Mejia was instructed to exit the vehicle and lay face down on the ground. He was taken into custody shortly after.

Observed in the vehicle was a clear baggie of a green leafy substance. This gave law enforcement probable cause to search Mejia’s vehicle. Two clear baggies that contained a crystal-like substance, that tested positive for meth were located in a backpack behind the driver’s seat. The meth weighed in at 211.6 grams.

Mejia was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on January 22, 2023, and has been in and out of jail three times before staying there after getting arrested on June 28, 2023.

In exchange for the guilty plea, Mejia was sentenced to 20 years for the Manufacture and Delivery of Methamphetamine and 10 years for Evading Arrest with a Vehicle. He also must pay $540 in restitution to the Department of Public Safety.
