Brutal Details Released Regarding Fatal New Year's Day Shooting

SAN ANGELO— San Angelo Police Tuesday afternoon released reports about the New Year’s Day shooting in downtown San Angelo where a 23-year-old man was shot and killed.

According to those documents, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the north alleyway directly beside Fat Boss Pub, at 114 South Chadbourne Street, regarding a murder investigation. Dispatch told officers that one man was deceased, and another was detained on scene. Once on scene, officers located the victim on the ground with visible trauma to the right side of his head, believed to be a gunshot wound.

The man who was detained, identified as Ryan Renfroe, surrendered to officers when they arrived. A handgun was in plain view in Renfroe’s truck, and two spent handgun cartridges were found on the ground near the victim who had a pool of blood next to his head.

An employee at Fat Boss Pub who is Renfroe’s wife said she was working and that Renfroe had come to pick her up after work. While inside the bar, she heard two loud pops from outside that sounded like balloons being popped. Then, she claims that Fat Boss Pub security came into the bar and told her that Renfroe had just shot someone.

She ran outside and saw the victim lying on the ground and attempted life-saving measures on the victim, but he was not breathing, had no pulse, and appeared to be dead. After this, she said that she saw Renfroe on the phone and did not speak to him.

The victim had brought several friends with him to the alleyway. One of them claims that the victim told him about a road rage incident that occurred with Renfroe. That spilled over onto social media where the two agreed to fight in the Fat Boss Pub alleyway. The victim and three friends drove to the alleyway and the victim exited the truck on the left rear passenger side. The friends heard two gunshots then left the area to call police.

The Fat Boss Pub security said he was taking out the trash after the bar closed and saw Renfroe sitting in his truck. The security guard knows Renfroe as he sometimes helps work security for the pub. Security then said that Renfroe was there to pick up his wife. Then, another dark colored truck pulled up beside Renfroe’s truck and that’s when the security guard heard two gunshots and saw the victim lying on the ground. The only people he saw were Renfroe and the victim. After the shooting, the security drove around to the front of the bar and went inside to tell the staff what happened.

Another one of the victim’s friends was interviewed who claimed that he was with the victim a few days prior and there was a road rage incident that involved the victim and Renfroe. The incident spilled onto social media and exchanges were made between Renfroe, the victim, and the victim’s friends.

According to this friend, Renfroe said to meet him at 115 South Chadbourne to resolve the dispute. Then, the victim and his friends pulled up beside Renfroe’s vehicle. The victim exited the vehicle to confront Renfroe. Renfroe got out of his truck with a handgun and after a struggle, the friend heard two gunshots. They then left to contact the police.

Renfroe was interviewed after waiving his Miranda Rights, said that he and the victim had gotten into a road rage incident a few days prior. He then found the victim on Facebook and the incident continued on social media. Renfroe gave the address of the scene as a place to resolve the conflict saying that he wanted to mutually fight the victim one-on-one.

Renfroe was sitting in his truck when the victim’s truck pulled up and he claimed that three men got out of the victim’s vehicle. Renfroe then said he took his 9MM handgun from a locked glove box in his vehicle and heard the slide of a gun being pushed forward. The victim then approached Renfroe and began assaulting him. Renfroe said he pushed the victim away, telling him to stop. Then, he alleged that the victim put his hand behind his back to his waist band and said, “The next one’s a blade b**ch,” Renfroe then said he took two steps towards the victim and shot him in the abdomen. The victim lunged at Renfroe, who fired a second time, and the victim fell to the ground.

Renfroe then said he called police after the shooting. He claimed his intent was to engage in mutual combat and fight one-on-one with the victim. Renfroe also said that he never saw a gun or a knife during the altercation.

Security footage was obtained from 115 South Chadbourne Street, the location of the Chadbourne Tavern, and at approximately 3:00 a.m., the victim arrived in a dark colored pickup truck with neon blue light under the wheel wells. It was seen on the footage that the victim exited his vehicle on the rear left passenger side and Renfroe fire one shot as the victim approaches him. Then, a second shot, and the victim fell to the ground. The camera footage shows no other individual exit the dark colored pick up the victim exited.

Footage from the First Methodist Church was pulled as well and had audio and video recording. The victim’s truck drove south on Chadbourne from Beauregard Avenue and enter the alleyway directly next to Fat Boss Pub. On the footage, a car door is heard being shut at 2:57:22 a.m., yelling at 2:57:24 a.m., the first gunshot bang at 2:57:36, a second gunshot bang at 2:57:29, then more yelling at 2:57:33. The victim’s truck is seen leaving the alley and travel north in front of the church at 2:57:34.

Renfroe was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on January 1, 2024, charged with murder and is currently being held on $750,000 bond.
