WATCH: Officer Involved Shooting Suspect Arrested

Houston, TX - Charges have been filed against a suspect apprehended following a shooting incident involving a Houston Police officer on Monday, Dec. 4, around 3:50 p.m.

The accused, identified as 23-year-old Albert Verin Holmer, now faces charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon in the 179th State District Court.

The incident unfolded when HPD Officer A. Lopez, who discharged his duty weapon during the confrontation, emerged unscathed.

Officer Lopez, having been sworn in as an officer in March 2017, is currently assigned to the North Belt Patrol Division.

According to reports from HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth and Detectives D. Escobar, C. Walker, and N. Barnes, officers from the North Belt Patrol Division Tactical Unit were actively searching for Holmer, who was the subject of an active felony warrant for aggravated robbery.

Upon spotting Holmer's vehicle in the vicinity of 545 Seminar Drive, a marked HPD patrol vehicle initiated a traffic stop.

Subsequently, Holmer parked his vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex at the aforementioned address and attempted to evade arrest by leaving the scene on foot.

As officers closed in on Holmer, he continued to flee on foot, prompting a pursuit. Despite repeated verbal commands to halt, Holmer refused to comply.

It was during this critical moment that Officer Lopez observed Holmer pulling a pistol from his jacket pocket and turning towards the pursuing officers.

Fearing for their safety, Officer Lopez discharged his weapon, striking Holmer in the arm.

Immediate medical assistance was rendered by officers until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived at the scene.

Holmer was subsequently transported to an area hospital, where he received treatment and was later released into custody. He has since been booked into the Harris County Jail.

Following standard protocol for officer-involved shooting incidents within Houston city limits, the case will undergo a thorough investigation by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Houston PD released the bodycam footage from the shooting, watch it here.
