ANTELOPE WELLS, N.M. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a cache of illegal drugs including heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine in a single smuggling attempt at the Antelope Wells border crossing.
CBP Columbus Port Director Louie Chavez highlighted the significance of the encounter, emphasizing the vigilance of officers at the remote Antelope Wells crossing. "This illustrates that CBP officers, regardless of the border's remoteness, maintain a high level of diligence in halting illegal activities akin to their counterparts at larger area ports," Chavez said.
On Dec. 10, CBP officers encountered a 31-year-old male Mexican citizen arriving from Mexico through the vehicle lanes. Upon primary inspection, an officer referred the driver for further vehicle examination in the secondary inspection area.
A comprehensive search revealed a compartment holding multiple mixed packages, containing 84.65 pounds of methamphetamine, 2.55 pounds of cocaine, and 2.77 pounds of heroin.
The individual was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further inquiry, while CBP seized both the narcotics and the vehicle involved.
