Man Charged in Deadly Shooting Spree Attempts Escape from Custody

AUSTIN, TX — Recent reports have unveiled shocking details regarding the aftermath of a shooting spree that claimed the lives of six individuals across Austin and San Antonio. The alleged shooter, 34-year-old Shane James Jr., reportedly made an attempt to escape police custody one day following his arrest.

According to sources, James attempted to flee from the Travis County Jail, resulting in law enforcement officers forcefully subduing him to prevent his escape.

The shooting incidents have left families in both cities devastated and grappling with grief. Security footage has revealed harrowing scenes, including the shooter breaking into a residence where a woman and her daughter were discovered deceased. A memorial now stands on Shadywood Drive in south Austin, a solemn tribute to the victims of this tragic event.

Among those who tragically lost their lives was 24-year-old Sabrina Rahman, remembered by loved ones as an exceptionally kind individual. Shockingly, Rahman was with her baby when the shooting occurred. In a heartbreaking act of bravery, she shielded her child, pushing the baby behind a car for safety before being fatally shot in the face.

Another victim, identified as Rahman's friend and handyman, 32-year-old Emmanuel Pop Ba, was killed while having lunch in his truck, according to his family.

Court records obtained by the Austin-American Statesmen on Thursday revealed James' attempt to escape custody, which occurred after his arrest. His initial apprehension followed a high-speed police chase resulting from a stolen car crash and a shootout with an Austin PD detective.

This tragic incident has shed light on James' reported history of mental illness. Law enforcement sources disclosed an earlier response by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office to an incident at James' parents’ home in August, during which he exhibited erratic behavior. Despite previous concerning episodes, including the cutting off of his ankle monitor, James faced only misdemeanor charges in 2022.

Attorney Amber Vasquez, uninvolved in the case, emphasized the need to address the warning signs preceding such tragic events, cautioning against undue focus on the circumstances of his ankle monitor detachment.

As the investigation continues, the potential for additional charges related to James' attempted escape remains uncertain. Currently, James faces charges of capital murder for the shootings that resulted in multiple fatalities.
