AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety's annual #Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement campaign kicks off today and runs through Sunday, November 26.
DPS Troopers will be out in increased numbers for this holiday traffic enforcement initiative. They’ll be looking out for those violating the law — including people who are speeding, those failing to wear their seat belts, intoxicated drivers and more. Texans are encouraged to make safety their top priority on the roadways.
Whatever your plans for the Thanksgiving holiday, please celebrate responsibly. Below are a few tips for everyone to follow to ensure we all have a safe time with our family and friends.
- Don’t drink and drive. Make alternate plans if you’re consuming alcohol.
- Move Over or Slow Down for police, fire, EMS, TxDOT vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated.
- Buckle up everyone in the vehicle — it’s the law.
- Slow down, especially in bad weather, heavy traffic, unfamiliar areas or construction zones.
- Drive defensively, as holiday travel can present additional challenges.
- Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices.
- Don’t drive fatigued. Allow plenty of time to reach your destination.
- If you can Steer It, Clear It: If you are involved in a non-injury crash and your vehicle can be moved, clear the traffic lanes to minimize traffic impact.
- Keep the Texas Roadside Assistance number [(800) 525-5555] stored in your phone. This number can also be found on the back of a Texas Driver License.
