PRAIRIE VIEW, TX – Seven people were injured in a shooting Sunday night at a historically black Texas University during a homecoming event.
According to the Waller Co. Sheriff's Office Facebook, authorities responded to a call around 10 p.m. Sunday to a pasture party near Prairie View A&M University where deputies found four adult females, two adult males, and one juvenile male were shot while attending a trail ride party on Cameron Road along FM 362. The Waller County Sheriff's Office reported Monday morning that the shooting occurred after a verbal dispute, and a firearm was discharged several times, striking seven bystanders.
All victims had gunshot wounds to their lower extremities with no known life-threatening injuries, police said. Notably, several injured victims were life-flighted to Houston hospitals from the Bucc-ees gas station location on Highway 290, around two miles from the site of the shooting.
Over 1,000 people attended the event, which was in conjunction with celebrating the historically Black college's homecoming festivities but was not an official event held by the university. According to a social media post by the Waller County Sheriff's Department, the event was a large gathering approved by the county judge.
"None of the security protocols that were established by the permitting body and agreed to by the promoter were found to be followed at the time of the incident," the sheriff's department said.
At this time, no arrests have been made. The event was not associated with the university.
