WATCH: Stolen Frontend Loader Stopped With a Hail of Gunfire

MIDLAND, TX — A late-night escapade turned perilous as a man commandeered a frontend loader, setting off a chain of events that led to a dramatic confrontation with law enforcement near the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center at 1310 FM 1788 in Midland. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. last Friday.

The stolen frontend loader, a substantial piece of construction equipment, was captured on witness videos careening erratically amidst cars and trucks on TX-191, a major highway linking Midland and Odessa.

In a particularly detailed video shared on Facebook, the frontend loader was seen attempting to access TX-191, with an onlooker noting, "He's gonna flip it." The front scoop's elevated position heightened its center of gravity as a swarm of police vehicles converged on the construction tractor from all angles, lights flashing and sirens blaring.

The operator of the frontend loader executed a daring spin maneuver, seemingly targeting the encircling police cars. At this juncture, the driver's intentions appeared far from playful; he seemed more like a man operating a potentially lethal weapon with a reckless disregard for his own safety. He likely had a death wish.

The frontend loader managed to merge onto TX-191, accelerating away from the camera with police in relentless pursuit. The mood of the person behind the camera turned somber. "They're gonna shoot him for this," the unidentified individual commented.

After racing a short distance away from the camera on the highway, the frontend loader left the road and re-entered the median between the service road and the highway. It made a U-turn and headed back toward its initial location when the video began. Vehicles along the highway came to a halt and pulled over, presenting potential targets should the driver of the stolen tractor opt to ram them.

Around this time, the sound of gunfire rang out, presumably from law enforcement officers who perceived the driver as wielding a lethal weapon. It sounded as if shots were fired at the frontend loader from various directions, using semi-automatic weapons. The gunfire persisted for over 15 seconds. Following the cessation of gunfire, there was no sign of movement from the frontend loader.

Meanwhile, earlier at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center was a concert by the Christian pop band, Casting Crowns.

A witness reported witnessing 14 police cars racing to the scene from the direction of Odessa.
