San Angelo Man Sentenced for Stealing Friend's Car

SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo man has been sentenced for stealing his friend’s vehicle to go see his daughter.

Skyler Walter, 27, of San Angelo, has been sentenced for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. According to court documents, on June 9, 2023, a San Angelo police officer conducted a stop on a vehicle that was reported stolen the day before. The officer located the vehicle traveling northbound on the 300 block of South Harrison Street as it was leaving a residence on the 1800 block of West Concho Avenue. Then, the officer got behind the suspect vehicle and the vehicle pulled back into the driveway of the residence it was leaving.

The driver was identified as Walter and, after being Mirandized, claimed that the owner of the vehicle let him borrow it to go see his daughter. Walter then advised that he knew he had it longer than he was supposed to, but he wanted to show up in a vehicle to see his daughter.

After the officer spoke to the passenger in the vehicle, she advised that Walter showed up to her work and asked her if she wanted to see his new car.

In the original report written by a different officer, Walter and the victim were hanging out and went to get drinks. When the two drove back to the victim’s house, he went inside and when he came back out, Walter and the vehicle were gone. The victim said that he did not give Walter permission to use his vehicle.

Walter was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Jail on June 9, 2023, and was released on August 24, 2023. That day, Walter pleaded guilty to Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and was sentenced to five years deferred adjudication.
