San Angelo Teen's Cash App Scheme Leads to Fraud Indictment

SAN ANGELO— Fraud involving Cash App has led to a San Angelo teen being indicted in Tom Green County.

According to court documents, in August 2023, Mikayla Berger, 19, of San Angelo, was indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for Credit or Debit Card Abuse after using someone else’s card to make purchases in November 2022.

A San Angelo Police investigator read a report written by an Angelo State University police officer and learned that on November 8, 2022, a victim discovered that an unknown person had used her USAA credit card to make several transactions through CASH APP, an online mobile payment service.

The victim’s credit card transaction log showed three different purchases were made through the app to another individual. All three of these transactions were made on November 8, 2022.

The suspect, identified as Berger, allegedly admitted to using the victim’s USAA credit card to make the transactions from her Cash App to the other individual’s Cash App.

Berger was arrested on March 23, 2023, by the Angelo State University Police and was booked for Credit or Debit Card Abuse. She was released on March 24, 2023, on $10,000 bond. Credit or Debit Card Abuse is a third-degree felony in Texas and carries a possible punishment of 180 days to 10 years in jail and a possible fine of $10,000. Berger is due in court on September 13, 2023, for her post-indictment reporting.
