On Video, Colorado City Councilman Makes Threats Against Woman

COLORADO CITY, TX – The Mayor Pro Tem in Colorado City is feeling the heat after a video was released of him threatening to kill a woman for borrowing his mother's water hose and sprinkler.

In the video, published on July 9, 2023, viewers can see body cam footage from a Colorado City Police Officer who was working on an issue at the local cemetery.

The argument was between two parties: an unidentified woman and the Contreras family. It was alleged that the woman had used a sprinkler and water hose owned by the family at the cemetery. The hose was hooked up to a city spigot but was owned by the family.

The mother in the Contreras family spotted the woman using the hose, and an altercation occurred. Although it was not violent, the mother claimed the woman threatened to kill her. Consequently, Colorado City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Sammy Contreras went to the cemetery and confronted the woman.

First Video

In the first half of the first video, Councilman Contreras can be heard threatening to kill the woman, both to her and he made the threats to an officer of the law. The threats were made multiple times. The councilman also threatened to bring his brother to the cemetery as he is the more violent of the two.

The officer thought the issue was resolved as both parties left the cemetery with the understanding that the woman would leave the plots and gardening tools alone. However, the officer was called back to the cemetery after another disturbance was reported.

Second Video

Upon returning, the policeman discovered the girl and the Councilman's brother yelling and threatening each other. The brother also threatened to kill the woman. At one point, he even claimed that if anything went missing, he would go to her house and hurt her, regardless of whether or not the girl was responsible.

The officer made no arrests as both sides made threats, but no physical assault occurred. Due to this, the councilman and his brother began criticizing the Colorado City Police Department and its interim chief at the time. Towards the end of the video, the councilman can also be heard attempting to bribe the officer, promising him a raise and a promotion.

Third Video

The video was recorded over a year ago but was just recently released. The interim chief of police at the time reviewed the footage and forwarded it to the District Attorney who may decide to prosecute. No charges have been filed at this time. The video's creator alleges a number of crimes, including assault, terroristic threats, and bribery.

Although I saw no arrestable offense in either video, the threat of retaliation against that woman contained death threats multiple times. That indicates a thorough lack of judgement and understanding that killing someone for simply vandalizing a grave is not justifiable. I certainly would not want anyone who believes otherwise on my local government council. They need to fire him for being a complete idiot.

In the state of Texas assault does not require actual physical contact with the intent to do harm.

According to Chapter 22, Title Five of the Texas Penal Code, a person commits the crime of assault when they “intentionally or knowingly threaten another with imminent bodily injury, including the person's spouse.” Examples of verbal threats can include: Threatening to kill someone.
