Peasant Village Fatal Crash Suspect Indicted After Jail House Brawl

SAN ANGELO, TX – The man who is accused of killing his brother in the crash at Peasant Village in 2019 has been indicted for more charges following a jail house brawl.

According to court documents, on June 14, 2023, Oscar Bernal, 43, was indicted for aggravated assault that caused serious bodily injury. The charge comes after Bernal assaulted a man in the Tom Green County Jail.

This assault was enhanced to aggravated after the victim suffered serious injuries from hitting his head on the jail's concrete floor.

Bernal has been in the news after he was involved in a crash that destroyed the San Angelo staple, the Peasant Village. The crash occurred back in Nov. 2019. At the time it was reported that Bernal crashed his vehicle into the restaurant. Bernal ran from the crash scene and left his brother Christian Bernal to die.

Because of the crash, Bernal was indicted for intoxicated manslaughter and accident involving death. His trial date for this charge is set for Aug. 21, 2023. As for the aggravated assault charge, it won't effect the trial but if convicted it could be used to determine sentencing.
