SAN ANGELO— A Rochester man has been indicted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after running over a woman’s hand with his truck.
Rondy Strickland, 37, of Rochester, Texas, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. According to court documents, San Angelo police were dispatched to the intersection of West Avenue N and South A&M Street for an unknown problem on April 22, 2023. Officers said that the victim in this incident had been transported to Shannon South for injuries to her left hand.
Officers responded to Shannon South and spoke with an officer who said the victim had told them that she was trying to retrieve her toddler from a vehicle, and she had fallen out of the truck. After falling out of the moving truck, she had her hand run over by Strickland.
Witnesses said that they, the victim and the child, and Strickland had gone to Cooper’s BBQ in Christoval, Texas. The victim and an intoxicated Strickland were arguing when they left the restaurant. The witness said the victim drove back home to San Angelo with the toddler and the intoxicated Strickland in the truck.
The witness was a few minutes behind the victim and Strickland as they were going to the same residence and when they arrived the victim was lying in the yard. The witness then said the victim said she was trying to get the toddler out of the truck when Strickland took off with the child with no safety seat in the truck.
The victim said she attempted to stop Strickland from leaving with the toddler as he was intoxicated and there wasn’t a safety seat in the truck. She said Strickland grabbed the child and drove away with the child on his lap. As the victim tried to get the child, she fell out of the truck as it was accelerating, and the rear passenger tire ran over her left hand.
At the intersection of West Avenue N and South A&M Street, Strickland was stopped by another witness. This witness said she followed Strickland and was able to stop him at the intersection by standing in front of his truck until officers arrived.
When officers arrived, they attempted to take Strickland into custody, but he refused to surrender himself or released the toddler. Strickland and the officers were in a five-hour standoff until Strickland surrendered peacefully. The child was unharmed after the standoff.
Strickland was arrested on April 23, 2023, and was released the next day on April 24, 2023, on $20,000 bond. Strickland was arrested again on May 28, 2023, for violating his bond or protective order. He was released on May 29, 2023 on $7,500.
