Man Steals Farmer’s Truck, Trailer and Hat, then Attempts to Cash His Checks

SAN ANGELO, TX — A farmer in Wall suffered a theft of his truck and trailer in addition to an attempted forgery of his checks on Wednesday. While the man accused of stealing the truck has been arrested by the San Angelo Police Department, the trailer is still missing.

According to the farmer, who asked not to be identified, his father truck, a Ford F-350, had a large 32-foot gooseneck trailer holding a 3,000-gallon water tank with a pumping system connected to it when it went missing. There were two white totes full of herbicide on the front end of the trailer.

Right after the truck and trailer went missing, a man wearing the farmer's hat appeared at the Texas Bank on Sherwood Way to cash a $5,900 check from the farmer’s checkbook that had been located in the cab of the truck.

The bank’s security procedures and training informed the bank teller that the heavyset man was likely not the farmer. The teller had the bank contact the farmer to see if cashing the check was authorized. When the bank learned that the checkbook was likely stolen, the Texas Bank alerted the San Angelo police who quickly responded and apprehended the man.

According to the booking report, Gerarrdo Lopez, 48, of San Angelo was arrested for Fraud via Use or Possession of Identifying Info (less than 5 items) and for resisting arrest. He sits in the Tom Green County Detention Center on a $30,500 bond.

The F-350 truck was located near Lopez’s residence near the intersection of N. Chadbourne and 12th St. But the trailer was no longer connected to the pickup.

“We’ve been looking for that trailer all day with no luck,” said the farmer.

Anyone who has information about the trailer’s whereabouts can claim a $500 reward. If you have information about the location of the trailer, call the farmer at (325) 212-7283.
