SAN ANGELO, TX – The family of San Angelo's three-decade-long cold case may not get justice after the suspect has been found incompetent to stand trial.
Adolph Gonzales, 65, was arrested in March 2019 by the San Angelo Police Department for the murder of Dovie Dykes in July 1986. At the time of the arrest, the 32-year-old cold case was solved with new evidence that put Gonzales at the murder scene that night. The most crucial part of the evidence was new DNA technology.
At the time of the murder, Gonzales and Dykes lived across the street from one another. Police stated during the original press conference that Gonzales, and one or more suspects, broke into her home, raped Dykes, and then stole her personal belongings.
Gonzales was arrested in Lewisville and was taken to the Tom Green County Jail on March 11, 2019. He was then indicted by a Tom Green County Grand Jury in June 2019. After years of court proceedings, Gonzales was finally released from the jail. He was, however, placed on an electric ankle monitor to ensure he remained accountable.
From then until the end of 2022, Gonzales would remain out on bond. However on Dec. 31, 2022, a filing in the courts revealed the evaluation of Gonzales by a doctor. Due to HIPAA, San Angelo LIVE! was not able to read that evaluation, but because of this, a competency hearing was held on Feb. 3, 2023.
On that day Gonzales, his attorney Gonzalo Rios, and District Attorney Allison Palmer met once again in court. All of the parties agreed that Gonzales was unfit to stand trial. With that, 51st District Judge Carmen Dusek sentenced Gonzales to 120 days in the Big Spring Mental Hospital.
After treatment, we do not know if Gonzales will be placed on any kind of mental health supervision or not.
