Sweetwater Police Stop Human Smuggling Operation on Interstate Highway

 

SWEETWATER, TX – The Sweetwater Police Department stopped a large human smuggling operation on I-20 Friday morning.

According to the Sweetwater Police Department, on the morning of 03/03/23 Officers of the SPD conducted a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Tahoe traveling East bound on I-20. Officers immediately detected indicators of criminal activity and found the vehicle to be loaded with numerous victims of Human Trafficking.

The driver of the vehicle, Ramon Rodriguez Lopez, admitted to smuggling of persons and was secured into custody. Lopez’s victims were transported to the Sweetwater Police Department where they were provided with water and care.

Several subjects had been deprived of food for an extended period of time and were each provided a meal courtesy of a donation from the local Whataburger prior to being transported for further care and processing by the United States Border Patrol.

Due to the large number of persons and required resources, TSTC Police responded and assisted our officers in this investigation.Lopez was booked on the felony offense of Smuggling of Persons and remanded to the custody of the Nolan County Jail Staff.
