San Angelo Man Indicted for Brutally Beating Girlfriend

SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo man has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury after brutally beating a woman and stealing her vehicle.

Charles Marques, 48, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of evading arrest with a vehicle after he allegedly beat a woman and stole her vehicle.

According to court documents, on November 6, 2022, San Angelo Police Department patrol units responded to the 4100 block of South Bryant Boulevard regarding a female assault victim. Once police arrived, the victim was transported to Shannon Medical Center downtown and officers contacted the investigators to inform him that the suspect, identified as Marques, was not in custody.

An interview was conducted with the victim, who claimed to have known Marques since June of 2021 and informed the investigator that she and Marques were in an “on again, off again” relationship.

The victim claimed that Marques was operating her Ford Mustang and Marques called her and said the vehicle had run out of gas at North US Highway 277 and FM 2105. The victim took the defendant gas but when the victim arrived at his location, Marques told her to move over in her Chevy Silverado pickup truck and he moved into the driver’s seat.

Marques then allegedly began striking the victim in her face with his hand. The victim also said that Marques had a hammer and a knife on him. After, Marques began driving at a high rate of speed around the northeast part of Tom Green County and threatened to drive into oncoming traffic and kill the victim. While driving, Marques allegedly said that if they were to get pulled over by law enforcement and she said anything, he would stab the victim.

At this point, the victim though Marques was going to kill her. Marques allegedly even stabbed the victim’s cell phone with a knife.

The assault continued as Marques drove through San Angelo and the victim’s face was gushing blood. At a store located on the 4100 block of South Bryant Boulevard, Marques made the victim give him her bank card. The victim was able to exit the vehicle, enter the store, and ask for help.

The investigator noted that the victim suffered swelling to the right and left sides of her face and swollen upper and lower lips. The victim’s left eye was almost completely swollen shut as was the victim’s right eye. Bruising was visible on both sides of the victim’s face and a small laceration was visible on the victim’s right cheek.

The San Angelo Police Department notified the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office that Marques was driving the victim’s vehicle. Onstar tracked the vehicle to the 20793 block of South U.S. Highway 277 at Tres Amigos Convenience Store just south of Christoval. Investigators traveled to the location and observed a stolen vehicle.

The investigator activated his vehicle’s overhead lights and Marques began to evad arrest. After a short chase, Marques crashed the vehicle into a fence and fled on foot. He was later located on a property east of the crash scene and was taken into custody.

Marques was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Detention Facility in the early morning hours on November 7, 2022 and is currently being held on $790,500 bond.
